American Petroleum Institute’s president Jack Gerard called the decision "unnecessary and shortsighted."
“The new moratorium,” he said in a statement, “threatens enormous harm to the nation and to the Gulf region. It places the jobs of tens of thousands of workers in serious and immediate jeopardy and promises a substantial reduction in domestic energy production. No certain and expeditious path forward has been established for a resumption of drilling.”
Tens of thousands of good jobs - hardly worth mentioning!
Administration allies hailed the reinstatement of the ban Monday and said that it would not harm the Gulf’s economy.
Unless, of course, your one of the tens of thousands of people to lose their job. Gotta be proud of a President that is so good at killing jobs! That’s why he’s The Chosen One!
Yeah forget about the largest enviromental disaster in our nations history. Ignore what happens if that toxic oil gets sucked up in a hurricane and spread over florida agriculture or parts of the gulf shore. You want to talk about a collapse. That area will be unlivable. Orange plantations wiped out. People are already being evacuated because of just the fumes. Imagine if that crap ends up all over their homes
So you’re for destroying tens of thousands of additional jobs because of one accident. That doesn’t surprise me! Has it occurred to you that this only further damages the Gulf Coast?
I am for protecting that entire area of the country. Like I said what happens if it happens again or a hurricane spreads that over the florida agriculture? The damage could last for years. What about those jobs? What happens then? What about the fisherman that will be out of a job? Or the restaurant workers?
There is no definite answer for this disaster. But making sure that there are not MULTIPLE other ticking time bombs out there is not a terrible thing.
Stop being so short sighted. Not everyone can sit on their couch and collect welfare oops I mean section 8 rent checks.
Normally throughout our history it has been “sacrifice the few for the many”.
What I am reading is “sacrifice the many for the few”.
Until the problem as it exists with drilling is resolved, it should be stopped until the problem is resolved. There already is enough damage without compounding the issue by allowing drilling to continue without safe guards, which has the possibility that the many more on the (Gulf Coast) will be sacrificed.
However, there are some that believe by letting them drill without safe guards, there will be more Section 8 renters from a larger disaster, which would put more money in their pockets.

It’s my understanding, and you can correct me if I’m wrong, that the spill was caused by BP substituting a tried and true disengagement procedure with one that was faster, cheaper, and not nearly as reliable. The safeguards were there but ignored.
I feel terrible for the wildlife. You can call me a bleeding heart all you want but seeing the affect of this accident on the wildlife in the area is heartwrenching to me. There is a great article in the USA today about all the birds that are going to migrate south for the winter that are going to fly smack into this thing.
I am all for drilling in the gulf as long as it is done safely. My parents live in Pensacola, Florida. My family is directly affected by this. I can tell you that not everyone in the area is opposed to the ban. Obviously the people with the affected jobs are going to have a one-sided opinion but there are many other residents of the area that feel that the ban is a good thing.
Mike your not even down there. All you are doing is trying to pin more job loss on the President. You could care less about the loss of the white sand beaches. Or the dead sea life. Or the loss of tourism. Or the poor health of the residents resulting from the fumes. I bet you still buy gas from BP stations up in Ohio.
In the words of Commander Spock “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”.
Truthfully I am not really positively sure what the actual cause of this disaster was, I am sure however, there will be a report on what actually happened.
A full report is in progress as I understand it will lead to proper safeguards and will hopefully stop this from happening again. Not at all defending BP, bottom line, they are responsible and should have to answer for what happened.
There is a procedure for safe disconnections. It has been done many times successfully in the past. What was different this time was that the rig was going “off lease” and overage charges were going to be assessed. BP chose not to utilize the safe method of disconnection which would have taken more time and cost more money due to the lease expiration.
I agree with the President’s stop on drilling. Forget jobs–what’s more important is health and safety
FO,
Where was the almighty one before the oil spill ?..Let me ask you this then…Please point out to a simpleton like me what are some of the positives of BO’s Presidency…
