THE SECRET

I hesitated to read this book because it was hyped to the moon and I expected it to be a bunch of rehashed mishmash of things I already read…

I was wrong!

A good read and a good way to pick up some great nuggets on how to propel ourselves to ever higher levels of success. Highly recommended!
Go buy a few copies, and give some away to your family and clients.

They’ll thank you for it…

Best,

Danny Welsh

P.S. I’m new to the forum here and not sure whether there is a better category for this post but I love recommending books so I hope this is the correct thread!

give us a summary

THERE IS NO “SECRET” TO REAL ESTATE INVESTING or any other business.

Mike

Here we go again…

hiscompany: I absolutely love The Secret. I’m a huge believer in the law of attraction. Here’s the thing though, I’m also a huge believer in reality and the things we face everyday. I know that if you do the work, stay positive (as much as possible), and push push push to make something happen it will.

Mike: 1 million percent right. THERE IS NO SECRET TO REAL ESTATE!! Get out there and work your ass off!! There’s the closest thing to a “secret” you’ll get. BUT…

In my opinion, if you take the attitude of The Secret on, plus propertymanagers attitude of there is no secret… your golden! Does that make sense?

Your not going to get rich sitting at home every day thinking your going to get rich, unless of course you inherit it. Watching Oprah and eating Bon Bons is not going to do it, you need to get your ass out there and make it happen, and projecting positive thoughts out into the world only works with massive action. There, I’m done. :biggrin

The book is junk and caters to the notion that we are entitled to success and material items. I agree with the other realists on the forum, you are rewarded for your hard work.

Who actually bought into the idea of the secret? besides its promoters who have a bucket load on the line…

I wish there were secrets to this game… Something yet done… Some magical way of investing that if you learn it it will be like finding the pot of gold under the rainbow. And the rainbows would be everywhere. The reality is you have to go do what ever it is you want to accomplish… Get up and do it…

I cant remember the last time , or for that matter the first time, I was rewarded for doing apsolutely nothing. If and when that happens that will be my little secret… Sorry for not sharing…

Michael Quarles

The Secret is ok… it has deeper meaning and it targets the absolute general public not those with deep understanding of business. It attempts to bring to surface the fact that we fail because we don’t believe in ourselves or we are too negative or pessimistic and it attempts to show people that you need to think positive and surround yourself with such people.

There are better books out there, the Secret was done by some of the best info marketers so they marketed it well. The content is still good for those who were never exposed to it.

Do you guys understand that “The Secret” movie, dvds, etc have NOTHING to do with a SECRET in business or real estate?? It’s an attitude thing. It’s a way of thinking. It’s not something that says HEY MICHAEL QUARLES, all you have to do is sit around all day and think positive and you will get rich! If you buy into that then I agree, your a sucker. And an idiot.

I’m going to do what I need to do to become wealthy PERIOD, that’s what I do, BUT with a more positive outlook because of things like the Secret, people like Tony Robbins, stuff like that. I enjoy it… but it’s not for everyone.

There is a secret. If it was not a secret then everybody woud be rich.

You know that in The Bible Jesus said (out of hiw own mouth) “the poor will always be with us”.I am talking about the Jesus that saved the whole world not the Jesus that mows my lawn. That means that no matter how hard you try to help people get out of the rut, you will not be able to. You can give them the food but you can’t make them eat. That is the secret.

Clearly I was making a suggestion that has proven helpful in my business…the idea I think I was “promoting” was not go read the Secret so much as give value-based gifts to those in your sphere of influence…follow me?

I guess just as easily I could have said read and share Jeffery Gitomer’s Little Black Book of Connections or Think and Grow Rich The Richest Man in Babylon by Clason or any one of a number of other non-technique-specific books that while not perfect or having all the wisdom in the universe contained within their “can-be-read-on-the-bathroom-seat-in-4-sittings” pages, still contain a great deal of value for the great majority of people.

Or at least for those who APPLY it.

That is friggin funny

That means that no matter how hard you try to help people get out of the rut, you will not be able to. You can give them the food but you can't make them eat. That is the secret.

Are you saying that people want to be wealty but are unwilling to work for it and they want the wealth given to them? That if they drink some magical can drink it is going to make them rich. If they go to a seminar or boot camp that somehow the forces of wealth and power will be inside them from that point to eternity?

This is cruel to say but it tires me to think of all of the people who want to and never do… Almost like they have been brainwashed by sociaty to think “You must be rich” when their reality is they dont want to be… If they did they would be… And although I am a big believer in Affirmations and goal setting about the second in into your goals you should know if you are a want to or a doer…

And its okay to be who you are just stop lieing to yourself and be free… My goodness…

Michael

I just got this the other day in an e-mail:

I saw a billboard sign that said:

 NEED HELP? CALL JESUS
 1-800-005-3787

Out of curiosity, I did.

A guy showed up with and old truck and a lawnmower…

You know I get people that ask me how I do what I do and I sit down and tell them how I do it including who to talk to for each step. All they have to do is call the people on the list and do what they say and they will be in a property. They then just go out and buy season tickets to the Houston Texans instead of buying that 4-plex that we were looking at.

When I was getting my MBA one of the classes talks about the science of incentives (like coming up with bonus plans and compensation, etc). The pain of a loss hurts more than the joy of an achievement feels good. In other words people will fight to avoid a negative event harder than they will strive to create a positive event. In the USA the poor live a really nice life. They have all the food they need, they have big screen TVs and they have free education for their kids. The incentive to reach up is really not there. You know what gets in the way of a great life is a good life. What gets in the way of a good life is an ok life. The poor in the USA have an ok life. Guys that have incomes like mine have a good life. But they would rather spend their afternoons picking their fantasy football leagues than looking for a good rental property to create a great life.

Well said.

Zig Ziglar: “The fear of loss cannot be greater than the desire for gain”.

I also remember something similar (but worded much more hilariously) in one of the underground books I got from Gary Halbert about showing a guy making 9 bucks an hour how to put in the work to use direct mail or any of a dozen other entrepreneuerial strategies to build a pipeline to wealth…and how much more that guy too often would fight like crazy to keep from losing 50 cents an hour drop in his pay than he would go after the other.

Anyway, I hope I included the quote correctly. I used to participate in a book-reading forum and those guys were VICIOUS about “protocol” :cool

I have to admit that I am cracking up whenever I read your posts. You do have a good sense of humor and funny analogies to compare things…

Quote 1: "I am talking about the Jesus that saved the whole world not the Jesus that mows my lawn. "

Quote 2: “If you are looking for a wife you need to know if you are you looking for big breasts, long legs or smarts. (In my case I wanted all of it) You don’t just walk around and marry the first female that asks you.” (http://www.reiclub.com/forums/index.php/topic,34489.0.html)

Keep up the funny informative posts. Regards!

I couldn’t have said that better myself. If they wanted… they would do. I had a guy come up to me and say “Man, I wish I could do what you do”. I said “Bullshit. If you wished that you would do it. Now either step up or shut up”.

That Jesus mowing my lawn this is hilarious Blue…

They definitely WANT to be rich, they just don’t have what it takes to BE rich. Let’s face it, getting rich requires a lot of work. You must be self-motivated; learn a business; WORK VERY HARD for at least a few years to build your business; and then be persistent to overcome all the challenges that come along.

Most people simply do not have what it takes. About 25% of out population is too lazy to work and receives some sort of government check. Of those that do work, the majority are not self-motivated and require the structure of a job to drag themselves out of bed each morning. Of those that are self-motivated, the majority don’t have the ability to actually learn a business to the degree that they can succeed. Look at the rental business. It is a simple business - no brain surgery here. Yet the vast majority of new landlords fail in a short period of time because they don’t understand cash flow, operating expenses, and dealing with tenants. Finally, for those that are self-motivated and do learn the business, the majority aren’t willing to work hard enough or be persistent enough to be successful.

The bottom line is that I certainly don’t feel sorry for all those that never become rich. THEY CHOSE TO NOT EARN IT.

Mike

You must be self-motivated; learn a business; WORK VERY HARD for at least a few years to build your business; and then be persistent to overcome all the challenges that come along.

I go through this everyday of my life…Just recently a guy I had working for me in my manufacturing business making very nice money and getting bonuses for outside deals I would bring to the company recently gave me his notice to leave…This is a guy I took from living with his mother at 35 years of age to make very nice money and making extra on the side…2 years later he wants to take a job as a plumbers helper making 1/3 of what he use to make…All because of he will be working slightly less hours, less responsibility and he can be with his out of work bar hag girlfriend on the weekends…

Point being there are so many dreamers out there…People love to fanatasize on how to make money but the truth is very few have what it takes to remained disciplined, focused, and to sacrifice other pleasures for longterm wealth…Then again I believe the parents of these people play a huge role in how successful they are…I grew up with parents, uncles etc who owned their own businesses, were in the markets and worked all the time…7 days a week in some businesses and holidays…But I knew how they lived and knew at a very young age thats what I wanted…Ballgames and BBQ’s can come at a later time…The young earning years 18-50 only come one time…These people seem to think they will suddenly gain fire later in life when the job only gets tougher…

Sorry for the long winded rant…I can say matter of factly I dislike lazy, undisciplined, unfocused people very much…My father always told me to do everything with gusto or don’t do it all…

You can’t soar like an eagle if you are hanging around with pidgeons…Grandpa’s words…

One more quick addition…I met up with a guy that I use to know, ask him how are things work, life etc…He says to me life is ok goes on to say he is working at a printing shop making dirt working the minimum he can( He is 40 years old)…Then he elaborates on how content he is sitting on the couch with his wife at night watching TV smoking a cig and figuring a way to make rent for the month…When I tell you I wanted to puke on the guy…His story made me realize even more what I’m all about…My life has gotten to the point where I can’t even be around these kind of people because they sicken me…

Those kind don’t bother me, if they are content, great for them. Its the ones that think they should have what you have and who figure you just got lucky or were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, yet have no desire to get up and make their own way that sicken me.

[[[…They definitely WANT to be rich…]]]

I don’t think they do. I think that what they want is to spend lots of money and be extra-self-indulgient consumers.

Spending lots of money on expensive luxeries isn’t the same as being rich. In fact, it is the antithesis of being rich.

In this great country of ours, all it takes to be rich is to really want to be rich. But if you really want something, you make the effort to work for it.

I haven’t read the book, so this isn’t a direct comment on the book, but I do believe that attitude is very close to being everything. I know so many people who sabatage their lives and sit around making excuses. They don’t want to make it, but they have to arrange it so it isn’t their own fault that they are not successful.

I have met so many people who talk big about how they are going to be rich, yet they won’t lift a finger to do it. I’ve even told a few of the big talkers about really good real estate deals, and none of them has even done as much as drive by and look at the house. If they “want” to be rich, but can’t be bothered unless someone gives it to them, they simply do NOT want it. They are just big mouth dreamers and braggers, thinking that they are making themselves look important.
