I found out about that in 1983 when I read this fantastic book by Bill “Tycoon” Green, called
Think Like A Tycoon. Best read I ever got for 6.00. It’s such a classic you can find it on Amazon.
And of course there is the classic: Have a nice day! 
The door to opportunity is marked “push.”
If there is something to gain and nothing to lose by asking, by all means ask.
