What would you do...

I have a low income Non-War zone rental house that has a claw foot tub in the main smallish bathroom(read tough to get around/work in). The vinyl was 45 years old and shot, So I had to pull it up. The wood floors below were pretty good shape except they put a 2’ x 4’ hunk of plywood under the new toilet. So I don’t think just painting would be appropriate. Considering it will be high moisture environment, What would you do?

I take the toilet, tub and sink out of the bathroom, rip up the hunk of plywood which is most often covering some rotten or soft wood, cut out the bad stuff centered along a floor joist… Setting your circular saw to cut no more than the thickness of the origional floor which is 3/4 inches if it is old hardwood. Throw in a chunk of plywood the same thickness of the hard wood floor or whatever is in there. Then I have a flat and sturdy floor to put a piece of luan plywood (real smooth thin stuff) over the entire floor, recut my holes and put some sheet vinyl down.

Some thick semigloss paint will repel water to some degree and good caulking everywhere. The next time I put vinyl down it will go on top of the last layer.

I do VCT tiles rather than a single piece of vinyl. It’s just what I’m comfortable working with. The luan will give you a good starting point. Hooch has good advice to get the floor stronger again.

I agree, VCT is good stuff! Especially if you wax it so water won’t get in between the tiles.
