I like a lot of his info. Like propertymanager, he does not sugar coat anything to do with real estate.
Yes - he is selling something, but a lot of his comments on other gurus are spot on. I do think he has a bit of an obsession with Rich Dad though.
I have subscribed to his newsletter, Real Estate Investor’s Monthly, for a couple of years and find it to be interesting and useful. He holds many strong opinions, some of which are wrong. I have no problem with his website, but then it is my opinion that ANY expensive bootcamp or REI mentoring program is a waste of money.
His detractors seem to fall mostly into two camps; those who are irritated by his know-it-all attitude, and those who have had their Personal REI Hero/buddy/favorite REI guru criticized on Reed’s website.
Yes, he’s a no-bulls*****r, just like Donald Trump. Also just like Propertymanager. So his reviews can be hard to read, but they’re honest and brutally truthful. I purchased every single one of the books he recommended — after looking at his reviews & other 3rd party reviews to verify they were good resources — but I did not purchase a single one of his books. He’s been a great asset for me & my real estate investment plans.
I completely agree - he does tear poor Robert apart too much!! The Rich Dad philosophy has made me well [and I mean well] into the six figures the last couple years through my passive & semi-passive investments…but I still like that John T Reed
you purchased books recommended by him but not his own?
i was thinking about getting one of them to check it out…
Good question…why didn’t I buy his books? =)
First, I didn’t buy his books as they were not rated on the big “free for all” review websites like Amazon.com, where you can see positive or negative feedback about books from other real estate investors and newbies alike. I want to know what I’m getting is good stuff.
Secondly, he is what I would call only a semi-successful real estate investor. He proudly advertises all the properties that he has owned over his lifetime - including their addresses - right on his website. I have plans to be far, far more successful than him. I have read every one of his reviews and article snippets on his website, and I can tell you that he is the type of guy who is highly intelligent…almost too intelligent. He suffers from analysis paralysis. He is full of great, no-BS information, but he is not perfect. By reading his stuff I can tell he lacks salesmanship skills, motivation and he’s not very passionate about being successful [aka he does not dream or plan big] . The ability to sell & market, along with being motivated & passionate about your [realistic] goals — will take you straight to the top and put you light years ahead of the competition. But that alone won’t work — you need knowledge too. So I took his recommended books, made sure they were highly rated by others [including successful real estate investors, not just newbies] – and bought them all. I have learned so much it’s amazing. But it’s almost too much! I had to narrow down my focus, and now I have a solid investment plan that I’m beginning to roll out, with most of it starting in 2008. I’m already making a six-figure income from my other non RE investments, and I’m a very busy guy, so I had to find the right RE investment strategy that works best for me. I’m sure you can find one that works best for you too.
thanks for your post…
i was led to his site by a search i did concerning one of the gurus and was a little skeptical of the guy at first…
however, browsing over his site has led me to believe he is intelligent enough to make valid points…
people will always have their own personal opinions and still be successful in their own ways…
i plan on absorbing the good stuff and leaving the critical stuff at the door…
good luck to you
jparkx1,
My take on John T. is that he has created a very successful web site to market what he sells. As a matter of fact his marketing method is nothing short of brilliant.
If he had a web site saying that Guru’s were great in would be mediocre at best. What he has done is used the negative method of selling, by creatively making most Guru’s, if not all look like they are bad people, thus making his products look like manna from heaven.
The negative close is one of the strongest closes there is and he uses it very effectively.
John $Cash$ Locke
He’s a windbag, who’s credibility flies out the window when he is bashing everyone and anyone on his site, but, oh, by the way, he happens to sell some products on real estate himself. :rolleyes Please!
motivatedceo,
Just curious which books you decided to go with and which ones you felt were the most helpful to your success?
He offers honest information at a reasonable price, but he is not a large investor and his stuff is not cutting edge. He is an author and makes his living writing books, not investing in real estate. That being said, his BS checklist is a good way to evaluate gurus and his information is what people need to hear. Keep in mind itis not the final word just like anyone else’s material. I agree with some of his evaluations and I disagree with others. I don’t think he bashes gurus as much as he points out flaws.
He is a bottom feeder who makes his money criticizing others whether he knows what they are about or not. Not recommended.
