Would it be a good idea to contact the atty. that is representing the bank in a sheriff auction? I was going to ask him if the bank is interested in holding on to this property and that I would like to buy it at the auction. Would this help me or hurt me?

It can’t hurt but its unlikely to help. I’ve tried and they tell you nothing. Best advice…go to several auctions BEFORE the one you are interested in to make sure you understand how they work when the property you are interested comes up for bid. Different states have different rules and regulations, beciome familiar with your state.local auction rules BEFORE bidding.
