Is it true that in the State of Florida if you rent your apartment units on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, you would have to pay taxes as if you owned a hotel? If so, how do I find the State Law?
There is a member on here named furnishedowner. She got caught up in that with her short term rentals. It was a major expense and headache. Don’t know how it is in Florida for that, but she’s in New Mexico an went thru a lot. There’s a thread on here about it, but she hasn’t posted on here in quite awhile.
justin0419 is right. The laws are specific to where you are but in general rentals are in month long intervals. If it is less than a month the state will look for occupancy taxes to be paid like hotels and motels. That can be things like sports and tourism taxes etc. that can add up to 20% of the rate. You also have to post maximum rental rates inside the unit fire extinguishers and a lot of additional requirements including tenant identification laws.
