Hi Folks, i have read somewhere about how to get rid of the smell in a home where the pets were allowed to pee and poop wherever, but I cannot find that entry.
Purchased a distressed property with this problem, took out the old carpet and found that the smell is lingering, however the carpet in the living area had covered a stick down vinyl tile floor. Neighbor says that there has been years of animals in the house, therefore the urine has been a constant attachment.
Is there an easy solution to getting the smell to subside ?
Thanks for all of your input on this subject, Ekim
I bought a mobile home that was previously used as a dog kennel. Carpet had to be changed of course, but years of urine had been absorbed into the particle board sub floor. so much that areas were actually rotten from urine! I put 3 coats of odorexit on it, each with a day to dry with the windows open, smell was gone! went over the rotten stuff with 1/4 inch ply, put down new carpet, and rented the place.
I’m a manager of a paint store and have always sold shellac for either pet odor or deceased human odor. The shellac comes in different varieties. If you have hardwoods you’d like to keep, you can use clear shellac. If you have subfloor you could careless about, you can use white pigmented shellac. Same goes for walls that are stinky from heavy smokers, white pigmented shellac. I’ve always recommended shellac and no one has ever come back and told me it still smelled. Brands it is sold under are Sherwin-Williams, Zinnser, etc.
The enzyme cleaners break down the chemicals in urine, but the area in question needs to be wet with these cleaners for 24 hours. Odor X and Nature’s Miracle are two examples. There is a company called Pro’s Choice that has a product called OSR. This is different than the enzyme cleaners in in several ways, including that the dwell time is only about 30 minutes. http://www.proschoice.com/ The website also has instructions about how to remove odors. These guys also have odor barrier products. If you found a professional carpet cleaner who knows how to use these products, I’m fairly certain that you could completely remove the odor.
