Painting over Marlite?

I’m rehabbing a house, that will be a rental.

This house has old Marlite in the kitchen and bath up to a chair rail. It’s in great shape, no cracks.

Has anyone sucessfully painted over it? What did you use and did it stay painted? How did you prep it?

I don’t want to tear it down because of costs. Sometimes it’s better to leave things alone. Ask me how I know this

Thank you for your answers,

You could skim coat and then paint. That would probably work/look the best.

Otherwise, scuff up the surface, use kilz (or other bonding primer) and then paint.

kilz is the best solution of the two
