In early 2007, I called one of those “Real Estate Investor Seeks Apprentice” signs. With the “help” of my upline, I got a loan for $20,000, spent $16,000 of it on NRU, and here’s what happened:
Like all other Network Marketing programs, I attended the meetings, complete with fake enthusiasm, and a cult-like crowd of attendees. I was sold on NRU with the promise that, because of the NRU community, I would have access to hundreds of “partners” who were swimming in cash, so that I could do deals with no money and bad credit, by simply partnerng with them. I attended the “college” in Phoenix, and the classes were mediocre, leaving out a lot of pertinent details (for example, in the Wholesaling class the instructor never even touches on the subject of HOW to build a Buyers list. He just says that if a deal is good, the buyers will come…)
After a couple months into NRU, I realized that hardly anyone, including my upline, were actually doing deals. The people who were doing deals were, more likely than not, already RE investors before NRU. There were hardly any people who were swimming in cash and willing to partner with you, because 95% of NRU is attempting to Wholesale (NRU markets to broke people and encourages them to get a loan in order to attend). Talking to the students of NRU, you’d quickly discover that hardly anyone is making any money, yet everyone is full of enthusiasm because they’re being pumped up at the meetings.
As for the NRU marketing program, the company claims that if you bring people to the “Intensives”, that they close 87% of attendees. I personally brought a couple dozen people to the Intensives… one person actually bought, and that was a good friend of mine who is already sold on the Network Marketing concept. So, why weren’t 87% of MY people closed?
The other problem with this company is the way that you’re given your education. You can attend the school 4 times a year. All of your “credit” hours must be used in the first year. If you don’t get all the classes in that you want to take in that first year, you’re screwed out of any further access to education, including online education.
In all, I met one lady in NRU who was on top of things. She did the kind of deals that take 2 years, but that pay millions in the end. She took me under her wing for a while, but she eventually left NRU because she was emphasizing doing deals over marketing NRU and the NRU “leadership” didn’t like that…
I have done a half dozen deals, using no money of my own. I will say that losing $16,000 to NRU is what motivated me to find out how to REALLY invest in Real Estate - education that usually comes free from sites like REI Club.
All in all, the founders of NRU are like all other founders of Network Marketing companies. They know that they can sell dreams using the success stories of the 5% who succeed with them, while they RAKE in the cash from the herd…
