No dumb questions...right?

I am willing to ask the question…the newspaper lists properties that are up for sheriff sale. The listing includes the person on the mortgage, of course, the address. There is also a dollar amount.

Am I correct in saying that this dollar amount is how much is owed on the loan?

plus fees

Is that section in the newspaper the first place to look for pre-foreclosures?

Yes if you do not have a legal paper in your town that lists NOD

The other would be to go to the court house or find a on line listtings for your area

Just realize that that “plus fees” can be alot. Thousands.

That amount is what is owed at the time of filing. Between filing and auction, alot of fees can build.

This very true the fees add up fast !!! They charge a fee for being late on the payments and then they add a fee for being late on the late amount . Then we add in the lawyer fees with this and the payments not being made so by the time it goes to the chopping block there could be 30 40 or more thousand just in fees alone

So it is best to get with the home owner as soon as at all possible and work a deal
