I have a ranch style home that needs a major overhaul - new roof, kitchen, bath, paint etc. I got initial quotes from 3 contractors - all about 150K. Which is more than I want to put into it. My question is can you save money by having the GC to the overall remodeling project, but go to a roofing specialist and painter separately? Thanks for the feedback.
Hi,
In the grand theme of things you don't save much and it could ultimately cost you more if you delay your general contractor from completion of the contract.
I advice in this instance to let your general handle everything as time delays will ultimately cost you more in the long run.

There’s a good course by Steve Cook on rehabbing on ebay right now. I know because I have it.
It talks about GC vs. going yourself and a ton more info with all kinds of forms and contract.
It might be of use to you.
With separate contractors, you can get a much better work done in terms of quality. Most of them are specialized in one thing only. when you step up on quality, your costs go up too.
