Need a RE Lic to collect option fees?

I realize that this board is a nationally board, but I am looking for anyone who have knowledge about the NY market:

I have been investigating doing lease options as my introduction into RE investing. I am curious if anyone can tell me if I need to be a license Real Estate Salesperson to collect option fees from buyers.

I would love to know if there any other obstacles that are specific to NY (LI and the 5 boros specifically) in dealing in lease options.
