Major

What’s up guys I have 2 questions and your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I’m about to go to college and I want to do REI when I get out of college. What would you say is the best thing to major in? The college I’m going to offers a RE major but I think that it is targeted for the people who are interested in being an appraiser, realtor, or real estate agent. My dad has a couple of friends who recommended Management Information System (MIS), I have also heard that a minor in marketing is essential. They also mentioned accounting. They aren’t saying a RE major is bad, just at the school I’m attending it isn’t great.

Also, what books do you recommend for a beginner? Right now I’m reading REI for Dummies, but I know that I’m not ready for the most advanced of books.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

This has been discussed many times on here.

There are no majors that directly teach you about real world real estate investing, including a major in real estate investing. Sure, some subjects may help you such as; marketing, business, management, etc. But if you can’t function without a traditional education in this business, you can’t function with one. Your not even going to learn half of the REI business in college. That is, unless you are investing part time during school. The best way to learn this business, and no one can argue with this, is to get out there and DO IT. Read some books, talk to some investors, then go get a piece of the rock.

This site is one of the greatest research tools that you will ever find.
The posts in these forums are very honest and open about the past
and current experiences that r.e. investors from around the country
have been through. Books are great for conceptual knowledge but
reading through this and other sites as well as hitting the streets
will go along way in reducing the learning curve that all investors
have experienced at one point or another. Read, but act as well
go to local re club meetings ask questions and make contacts.

Good Luck
