Linking a 2.5 ton A/C condenser to a 2 ton air handler - a problem?

I have an A/C guy that is attempting to link a 2.5 ton A/C condenser (a new one) to a 2 ton air handler (a very old one). I imagine that this would cause the lines to freeze up, and he should just find a 2 ton A/C condenser. Do you guys think this would be an issue??? Or would it more than likely work just fine? Thanks

Not a good idea. May work for a SHORT time but will ruin new compressor. Run away from this. You may in most cases use a larger coil indoors but not outside. With the new SEER ratings the indoor coils need to be much larger than they use to be.

Hope this helps

How much is the rent on this unit? If it’s a low to lower-middle income rental, I would not install central air. I made that mistake when I first started my rental business. Central air units (and even worse, heat pumps) require maintenance (money) and are targets for theives. I don’t plan on ever installing another central air unit except in my most expensive SFHs.

uh…you have to match the condenser (inside) to the compressor (outside). you don’t mention the size of the compressor.

methinks the condenser sits inside the air handler, no?

don’t know what role the size of the air handler plays, since it just moves air. but I would think it’s less important than matching condenser to compressor.
