Legal protections for immigrants

I am moving permanently to the US with my elderly parents because they can’t stay behind and take care of themselves. I’m concerned that upon their death, there will be tons of hoops to jump through. What can I expect? Is there any way I can protect myself? Maybe through a lawyer? I’ve heard a will is important? What about death taxes? Can anyone help avoid those taxes? Do I even have to deal with the federal death tax? Please help before I move to the US!
