I want so badly to get my own place. Peace and privacy is what I dream about compared to what I have to put up with now. The problem is my current situation is all messed up at least how I see it. Here is my situation. I am working part time because my job is cutting everyone’s hours down to nearly zilch. I can’t find another job anywhere to save my skin. And I don’t mean just any job either. I mean a better paying stable job that can provide me with enough income to get me out there on my own rather than being stuck under the roof with my folks like so many years before. I am stuck with student loan debt that I cannot afford to pay back which is a total of nearly 40k. I so regret getting a degree now. Then I have a few other debts that I am stuck with. And my savings account is like only 1 grand.
Yes I know it could be worse or others have it just as bad. I know some of you are going to say something like that, so I spare you the trouble. I just been up day and night trying to figure what I am going to do. It is frustrating and I don’t know how much more I can deal with this situation.
You have to look at what’s available to you. If you can’t find a better paying job, you may have to settle for a couple lower paying jobs and just work more hours. There are 168 hours in a week. How you spend them is up to you. Some people are the type that will complain they have no time when they only work 40 hours per week while other people work 100 hours per week because that’s what they have to do. If you don’t like your living situation, working more will keep you out of it.
Are you the type of person who would rather live completely alone or could you find a roommate for a year until things get better?
Have you ever thought of joining the military? Since you have your degree, you could join and become an officer. It’s not for everyone, but the pay is pretty good these days.
Just throwing out options. Look for jobs not necessarily related to your degree. Your degree shows you’re trainable and capable of committing to something. You may be surprised at who would be willing to hire you.
Let me see here.
Military for= disqualified because of my asthama. They told me so.
Roommate= never ever for me. I live with my parents. Yes I do want to be completely alone. Besides having a roommate means I don’t get to do as I please whenever I want to out of respect and the need to comply with what my roommate wants.
I would take a second job somewhere if I could have. I was luck to get the job I have now thanks to my relative who pulled some strings to get the job. I have never been lucky enough to land a job all on my own. It was always about who you know, which kinda sucks for me.
My degree=nothing to employers because they still turn me down even if I am qualified for the job.
And if that isnt for you… I would suggest going to school for one year and becoming a LPN or something in the medical field where its easy to find a job.
School is what got me in the mess I am in now. If I can’t pay for the degree I have now, how am I going to pay for yet another degree? I already have a bachelors degree in accounting. Yet even that is not good enough. There is no need contact the military again. I already did that twice and the answer was still no.
I would be aware of your outlook and mental diaglogues. I would recommend making a list of all the things you should be grateful for like having a job even if its part-time, a roof over your head, the physical ability to work,…etc your debt is temporary (hopefully) and so is your living situation if you want it to be. It does not sound like you “are screwed” and I believe that you can and will change your circumstances. Good luck!
Yeah I know I am grateful for a job even it got me struggling paycheck to paycheck. Really? That’s not what I want. Yes a check is better than no check, but really? After all the effort I put into trying to make my life better than it is now, and I got nothing to show for it. I am not even gonna lie. The main reason I want to get into real estate investing is to make nice chunk of change not just to provide a better lifestyle but to payoff all those debts. Right now I need to get a big piece of that change this very minute.
With your college degree you are qualified to teach English abroad.
You can make a really good living doing this and there is always demand. I taught English classes in Japan for 2 summers and made about $40-$60/class part-time.
I think you need to leave the nest and try something new. I know of a couple that saved up $40,000 in a 2-year stint teaching English in Japan. They also had a safe and interesting experience that changed how they looked at the world.
Teaching is not in my blood. And I wonder who is going to come up with the money for me fly to Japan of all places. I know it won’t be me. I can see the look on my family’s faces now if I tell them I am going to Japan and I need them to drop me off at the airport. Yeah right.
This really concerns me because I have 3 friends in college and they are all going for accounting >.<. I hope for there sake they arent going into a dead field (your not the first person ive heard accountants arent getting hired). Mind if I ask what part of the country you live in?
But yes, I’de listen to Furnished and DaveT. You cant have the mindset “im not going to do this and that.” You got to do what it takes to thrive.
If the military wont take you… teach. IF you dont want to teach, get a job from something unrelated to your education, even if its Mcdonalds. You can do anything in this country, just put your mind to it.
Like me, I went to school for nursing (and I DID NOT want to be a nurse), but I did it because its something I just HAD TO DO. What you WANT TO DO and what you HAVE TO DO are different sometimes unfortunetly. Its sad your degree doesnt mean much right now, but you gotta find a way to move on.
I’m in a similar situation as you (except I am still paying for school with loans, and like Hoosier4life2005 I am studying in the medical field, not because it’s what I want to do, but because it’s a safe field). I have about $30k in student loans from when I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree. I got about halfway through and realized I wouldn’t be able to get a secure job without some real practical education (I was studying English). I have a part time job now, but the hours have been so bad that I’ve gotten less than $200 on my last two paychecks. As of right now (Friday) I’m not even on the schedule for the whole of next week. I’ve applied for jobs and been denied because my credit is horrible because I haven’t been able to pay all my bills on time because I’m not getting paid enough (I know, English major, run-on sentence? lol). The difference is I am not :flush myself quite yet.
If the situation is as dire as you seem to think it is, you would not put aside what don’t want to do and do what you need to do. Getting roommates would be a good idea. The teaching idea is also a very good one. You haven’t even looked into it. You might be able to get them to send you a ticket to Japan to come teach. You will probably have to stop looking for jobs you are qualified for and start looking for jobs you are overqualified for. Take the degree off your resume for such positions. And you have savings? pssshhh lol there’s like $30 in my savings account.
Just be more positive. You say you’ve been up day and night thinking about what to do, but you should seriously consider the things that you’ve crossed off your list simply because you don’t want to. It might be uncomfortable for a little while, but if you keep working hard and keep your goal in sight, you’ll be able to pull yourself out of it.
Let me give you a run down of all the crap I dealt with over the years. Looking for any job unrelated to my degree did not work. Volunteer work for United Way doing tax returns for free did not work. Internships rejected me. Entry-level jobs did not work. Jobs that SUPPOSEDLY did not require years work experience did not work thanks to false advertisement. Everyone turned me down because I didn’t have many years work experience immediately after graduation. That is so impossible and unfair to new grads. Oh I am going to move on alright and move right into self-employment. I wanted that all along. I like the thought of having the freedom to work when I want and how I want. And get paid what I want. These things I can never do working for a boss.
You can find something if you put your mind to it. How about truck driving? Sure, you will always be gone, and its not fun at all, but you can bank some serious cash. Sorry, theres not much else to say, you seem to have a negetive outlook on things. Its not like all these companies are conspiring against you. What area of the country you located in?
Probably the same reason we are all doing this. Personally, I am an insufferable know-it-all and know that I’m smarter than all the bosses I’ve had. shrug I’ve accepted my flaws lol. So I finally decided to put all my intelligence and confidence to good use making me and my husband money.
I actually did consider truck driving at one time. Traveling is something new and exciting to me, but I’m afraid I may fall asleep at the wheel. I wrecked my last ride doing that 4 years ago. Scared me to death. I’m in Alabama.
My friend’s husband has an accounting degree and is a bartender at a local restaurant presumably because of the same problems you’re experiencing. Working for yourself and being your own boss is a good goal to have, but you need a means to get there. You’re not just going to become a successful investor next week able to support yourself. It’s rough out there right now. Hopefully you can find something you enjoy doing that pays ok.
take it in stages, your not going to go from “can’t pay my bills or make it” to being in good financial shape with a great job, in one step.
First find a way to be able to pay your bills and start getting your credit in good shape, lots of great ideas here, go do anything legal, bartender, bouncer, odd jobs, etc etc, there are people that made $200k+ a year that are doing odd jobs now, they don’t complain, they do it to make ends meet, and think of it as a new challange.
You can make some extra money bird dogging or doing odd jobs for a REI,maybe not what you want, but hey this is life.
I would recommend reading some books on motivation/attitude, if you can’t afford to buy them, go to the library,
I doubt of most of the people on this board that are successful now have always had it easy,it is what YOU make out of it,
I have two friends that read hours everyday, all work related, they both would leave the office with stacks of what they would read that night, are they young, up and coming people,no, both are billionaires
tbodley74,
I would not hire you if you walked into my office today.
That is because I would hire the person who walked in with a big smile, firm handshake, eye contact and the right attitude–“I’m new at this but I’ll do any job that you need.”
I have thought before of a test…applicant needs to step past spilled wastepaper basket to get application–what are they gonna do?
The person who stands around waiting for instruction doesn’t last long.
The one who cleans up stuff BECAUSE IT IS THERE gets hired.
To me, it sounds like you are suffering from depression. If you don’t feel good it is hard to convey a happy attitude that gets you hired. The best thing you can do is to take care of yourself. You are all you’ve got.
