Ever watch COPS? I’ll bet almost 100% of those folks are renters.
Or squatters. In the case of some of Mike’s tenants that might be the same thing.
I wonder if millions of failed newbies who decided to make their fortune “flipping” will be suing as a result of this revelation? I think that’s almost a certainty.
I’d love to see A & E or someone do a flipping show reflecting the truth, that a few people are successful and the majority lose money. Woudn’t that be interesting?
A better show would be following landlords around. You couldn’t write drama like that of low income tenants.
Mike
I am not kidding at all when I say that you should contact A&E or TLC and pitch this idea to them. Immediately. I think a show that follows the trials and tribulations of a landlord would be great TV and very educational.
This kind of stuff is seriously discouraging to a new investor. I knew that show wasn’t exactly an accurate depiction of REI. I thought that they just made it look a lot more glamorous then it really is just for television. Not fake it. I actually believed that it was possible to properly and ethically flip properties. It is pretty dissapointing.
I thought it was possible to profitably, ethically, and responsibly flip properties if you learn how to buy them correctly and manage the rehab well.
Isn’t anyone here doing that?
(Maybe this post should be on a different Board?)
Topaz
Yeah Topaz, I’m doing that right now. Not sure what the “was” was all about.
Jared - maybe I worded my post in a confusing way. I was responding to John-e saying that he was disappointed to learn that you can’t be ethical and make money by flipping. Not sure if he was being sarcastic or not.
I’m glad to hear you are doing well because I’m hungry for inspiration!
Topaz
Of course it’s possible to flip properties ethically.
Don’t let one bad apple ruin the whole bunch for you.
On second thought…let the bunch be ruined. I don’t need any more competition!
Gotcha Topaz. And I second Broni… in my head there is no other way to be than ethical in everything in life. Plus I am a big believer in karma, the law of attraction, or any other way you want to say it.
That’s REALLY interesting. It makes you wonder about the Montelongos? =)

Laccima’s real estate license was revoked on 9/26/2005! You’ve really got to do something BAD to have your license REVOKED! I’ve been watching his show for a laugh for a while now. The sidekicks are really more savy than he is. He should ditch the BMW too. It’s not making him any money!
I don’t like Sam because I don’t like the cigar club, BMW driving, money flaunting types. Using the term “sexing” when refering to a house is incredibly annoying.
He comes off as some-one who grew up lower-middle class and now that he has a little bit of money he has to make sure EVERY person knows it. His side kick Lamont is incompetent and is either there just for the show or Sam doesn’t care about his workers pulling their weight. Lamont is lazy and would probably be pumping gas ( and not doing THAT right) if Sam fired him. Lamont accepts no responsibility and gets pissed when has actually has to do something that involves more effort than making a phone call.
But the show does show newbs can make money, not because of what you learn about REI but because if a guy who hires incompetent help, spends his money on things to show that he has money, and does tastless rehabs like adding a recording studio to a property can make money in REI than I can too.
There is nothing worse to me than after someone finding out what I do, they say “yeah, like the guys on Flip This House!” UGH!!!
Flip my house means in english F**K my house…
Reality TV is all fake… We all know that. Find a reality tv show that really shows the truth… Producers have to edit and reshoot scenes till it works…Just lower paid actors, guess that is why they hate reality…

They never made money…they never owned any of the houses!! Watch the vids at the begining of this thread. Sam Leccima is a TOTAL SCAM ARTIST.

What do you think about the show “Property Ladder” on TLC? That seems to be about as real as the shows get.
The Real Deal is pretty good, but still very misleading.
