Painting the basement that is a block foundation, which of course has tiny holes in the brick, just wondering the best way to paint this, also their is some staining on one wall. Should I paint with a primer only? Just want to make it look cleaner and I would like to paint the floors also which I could easily roll, but if I use a brush on the walls im afraid ill be painting for a month. I heard the sprayers are messy and splatter. Any thoughts. Thanks
The trick I use for raw block is to dampen the block with a hose or sprayer with water and paint with acrylic paint. The paint being water based “chases” the water into the block. Instead of coating the block it becomes part of the block and won’t flake off. Works for cement floors to. But remember to keep the block damp.
Do you use a roller then or a brush, whats the cleanest way, would diluting the paint help. Also painting with primer I thought would help hide the stains, which do you think would work best. Im painting it white so it wouldnt matter to use just primer alone. Thanks for your tip, that makes sense.
Airless sprayer and or Spray it!!!
I personally like to use a brush for this method, 4 or 6 inch one. Like I said the paint will chase the water. Its more like you are staining the blocks rather than painting them. Secret to getting any paint job done is to keep your tools moving. Another mistake people make when using a brush is they only use the tip of the brush. Fill the brush and use all of the bristles when you stroke. Don’t dilute the paint the damp wall will do that. As far as the stain a wire brush should do a good job on it and there are products that will wash a stain off the block, just depends on the stain. If the block is raw I wouldn’t seal it with a primer before using this method, it would make that area standout.
Is this a Rental or your personal house?
If it is a rental lift up your left arm and smell the pit if it smells better in the house then it does under your arm say “Good enough for them good enough for me” and move on!
