I just bought a townhouse that has a fireplace that is beige but so dirty inside. i am not sure if its concrete or tile or brick. I tried srubbing bubbles and brush to no avail. Any suggestions?
My suggestion is to not worry about cleaning the inside of the fireplace for aesthetics. If you want to make sure creosote isn’t built up in the chimney and there are no bird nests in there, that’s one thing. But I wouldn’t worry about cleaning the fireplace to just make it look better.
I would think someone wanting to buy my house and doing a walkthrough would like it clean, the cleaner the better. I think they are fire bricks but I cant get soot off them :}
There is a cleaner specifically for soot. It does a better job than most cleaners for that purpose, but still not great on a porous material. I can’t remember the name, but any fireplace store should carry it.
Thks!
You can use Muriatic Acid. Dillute it in water and wear a mask and gloves. This will make quick work of the job. This is not a friendly feel good chemical it is caustic and will harm you if you do not take safety precautions. Once again the safety is simple:
-
Wear gloves.
-
Wear a mask.
-
Dillute Acid and strengthen as needed til it takes off the soot.
-
have plenty of towels on hand to clean up as solution spreads. I would lay them down to catch the solution and roll one up as a dam.
I clean concrete this way and have removed grout that was left on an entire tile floor for weeks. This will work for you, hope this helps.
Instead of cleaning the INSIDE of a fireplace, I would just put in an iron grate and an armload of nice looking real logs. Now the buyer can visualize the flames. Project done.
