does anyone have experience w/rentals upstate NY

I am curious if anyone out there has any properties in syracuse/rochester area–also any referals for reliable handyman. thanks

I have a colleague at my place of work who has a two family in Fulton, just north of Syracuse. It’s a really nice place…her two family, but Fulton is a mess.

I think the Cuse area is good, especially if you’re willing to absorb the risks of renting to college students. Rochester the same, U of R is a big school. I was talking with a realtor up there who knows all the ins and outs. he HIGHLY recommends renting to college kids. For me, the trouble is, I went away to college, lived in a Frat house and saw what kids do to these off campus housing units.

If I lived up there, it would be different, but I don’t, so I don’t know.

I know that REMAX offers a TON of two family units, running around 45k average.

That area is dead though. I mean, they boast a growing economy, but it’s upstate NY…if it ain’t near the water, or a big hunting/fishing area, or near a college, it’s no-man’s land.

email me…where ya from?

You are in California, your rentals you are looking at are in Upstate New York. Upstate New York will never be like California, it doesn’t really appreciate, the economy is in the toilet and day by day is slowly turning into a welfare state. If you want to take the risk, go for it, but I wouldn’t touch anything in the region unless I was able to manage and collect the rents myself. And renting to college kids being a distant landlord, well we all know where the keg parties are going to be at!

i am from utica, ny and unfortunately, the last poster is about dead-on. the economy is in the toilet as there are very few high paying jobs to keep the young people graduating college and high school in the area. but, properties are dirt cheap, and you could probably get a good deal from one of the many boomers in the area with lots of equity looking to retire.

i just don’t know if there are any immediate plans to turn the area around…
