Im hearing a lot about tearing all the old plaster out down to the lath. This just seems REALY REALY timeconsuming and backbreaking considering the redrywall phase. Not to sound cheap but isnt there a better way if you dont have to rewire and plumb?
You could drywall over the plaster. I have heard of people doing that before.
that is visually appealling, and sure makes rehab quicker, but it’s shoddy because what happens to plaster and lathing in old buildings, just in general, over time? it shifts, it moves, it cracks, and if u r really unlucky and there is a pier and beam foundation under the house and that sinks like they usually do around here, the latthing can separate from the studs and the whole wall bows in, plaster and all. drywall won’t stop it even after releveling. it’s not pretty. i’d advise u to do it right or don’t do it at all. remove the old stuff and do a professional job ;D
