CPAs and RIA Registered Investment Advisors as sources for Private Investors?

I watched a quick video tip the other day of a guy suggesting contacting CPA and Registered Investment Advisors as a source for private investors. I contacted a couple to make sure they are able to recommend an unregistered investment such as a private money real estate loan. CPA are fine, also Registered Invesment Advisors do not have to abide by all the SEC rules that Financial Advisors, CFPs and those with their Series 7 and other licenses.

Has anyone used these sources successfully in the past? It seems like a great idea to me as they know people with money and you can offer to pay them points. They know tons of retirees or people with money who would love an 8% return secured by a solid real estate deal. How many points would you recommend?
