College Student

Hi,

I would like to start working as a Real Estate Developer. I am 19 in less then a month, and enrolled in a Bachelors of Commerce Program, majoring in Finance. I have founded an investment club, which will be affiliated with the Center for Advancement of Capitalism (Im a big fan of Andrew Bernstein’s work), and I am working on starting a collections agency before our Winter break is over. Graduating a year early I have worked in a sawmill for six months, before working another 6 months as a carpenter. I have done carpentry with family since I was 16.

I would like to work as a Real Estate Developer while I am pursuing my bachelors of commerce in two years (yes i said two years). I am taking eight courses a semester and five in the summer, working a month out of each year in Fort Mcmurray (I make 8000 in that month). I have drive, and I am not easily stressed, I already invest in the stock market, and even in these times I am doing well. I have thought about looking for employment as part of a development team, being paid a fee, and I would even freelance through a few projects. I have good ideas. Does anyone know how I can get my foot in the door? Does anyone know another forum I could forward my questions too?

Lavallee,

You should be reading your local newspaper to follow building projects in your area. Drive to the building sites, talk to the foreman, and find out if they can use your skills. Have a resume in hand.

You can join your local Chamber of Commerce as a student member. When you attend their meetings you learn about all the new business and building in town. People start to recognize you as a part of the business community.

Since you are a student, why not research “student rental housing” on these sites. There is a ready-made market and you can figure out how to gain from it.

Good luck in your endeavors.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll see If I can join the Chamber of Commerce, and I’ll try to learn more about solutions to student housing. I am also working on a website and I will show it to the forums on Monday.
