cleaning a pool

I’m in the process of cleaning out a pool at a house I just closed on,I had two pumps running today getting the water out,I went to show another house, got back and the pumps had been unplugged, later I noticed there was a card from someone at the enviromental department at the city asking me to call them, oops

has anyone ever heard you can’t pump out a pool? I was letting the water run down the street into a storm drain

Most cities do not allow people to just dump chlorinated water into a yard, street or storm drain … that’s big time pollution. But … nearly everyone with a pool does it! I have. And I know people who have.

Personally I would never have a rental with a pool, even if it’s in Highland Park or some other primo area. Why? The liability is too big and the upkeep is not worth it. Now, if this is a short-term investment (e.g. you plan to hold it until the market gets better than sell it) OR a rehab, that’d be different.

Good luck

It makes sense to me. There are two kinds of drains. Storm drains and sewer drains. Very often, storm drains empty into the nearest river without treatment. Things live in the river. Pool chemicals are designed to kill things that live in water. I never had a problem in the past doing that when I owned a pool, but I stopped buying places with pools and I guess the by-laws have changed since then.

believe me,there are no pool chemicals in this pool, but there are things living in the pool,I think a turtle, hopefully when I get the water out I will find out what is living in it

Only pump on off hours: during the nights or weekends when the bureaucrats are not on duty.

Except in this instance, right?

I suspect the city inspector showed up because some dipstick neighbour across the street complained about it. Now, you do it again while they are not on duty after getting a warning and the dipstick across the street takes pictures with their cellphone and you’ve got yourself a fine. You then argue with the inspector and he does other random inspections because you’ve pissed him off and then he also calls his buddy from the Fire Marshall’s office to do his own inspections. That’s gonna be fun.

the city inspector was nice, she said just pump it into your sewer clean out, she said she could give me a ticket, but realized it was an honest mistake and I stopped pumping when I got her card so she wouldn’t do anything

,actually doing it that way is not as smelly,

She cut you some slack…very nice. Not all of them are. Some are miserable simply because they cane be and they’re ‘in charge’.

I think it was just that Andy charm. You must have Tigerblood.

He’s probably a charmer…me, not so much…they’d put me straight in jail - like Guantánamo!

Keith

You and me both Keith. I tend to take people who are in a mood to give me a break and by the end of it they want to cut off my arms.

it’s pretty easy to have a good attitude when you are calling someone that you realize holds all the cards, she had all the power, I had none, so I apologized, begged for forgiveness, this time it happened to work
