and the house is just about 900sf… and I am ENJOYING having my son work with me on it…

I am NOT a full-time investor… this is a side investment to me at this point, and I will be very happy with my ROI… But, I am not on FDjake’s time schedule…

By the time I do sell it, we will have had it for over a year, and we will ALSO pay less taxes on it, GIVING us MORE of a return on it while accomplishing some personal goals in the process… we plan on making another purchase in the coming months… I like how you operate with cash, and that’s our plan…

If you can’t simply put 2 things together,I can’t help.I know numerous dealers in my area that say they are taking in perfectly fine cars that someone would love to have.Along with distroying them,they are hurting the used car market too.SO I GUESS IT’S GREAT FOR THOSE WHO CAN AFFORD NEW,BUT THERE ARE SOME WHO CAN’T!!I’m glad your shares in ford are thriving,but this is the wrong way to interject in private business as usual.

My friend just turned in his 2001 Kia Sportage in Cash for Clunkers. It wasnt a luxary vehicle by any means, but it got him for point A to point B JUST FINE. They crushed it I assume, and there was nothing wrong with that car. Seems to me a bit foolish to crush good assets like that. Just my opinion…

The Goverment is giving out MONEY to REGULAR AMERICANS… They handed out a LOT more to MILLIONAIRES on WALL ST that thougth their banks could be run like CASINOS!!. They handed out $600 in rebate checks after 911…remember that??? What did you BUy with your $600???
At least some people have a NEW, fuel efficient, SAFE car in their driveway with this plan…Is it perfect…NOPE…Is it a shame to see decent used cars having their engines SEIZED so dealers can collect their cash for clunkers money??? Yes it is…Is it selling cars??? YES…BY THE TRUCK LOAD. And don’t worry too much about these new small cars…

Positive (in his usual LET’S CHANGE THE SUBJECT when I’m getting my @ss handed to me way) posted a picture of TWO 2009 Mercedes Benz cars hitting each other head on (a C-class and a smart car)…If ANYONE knows of a single person in the UNITED STATES of AMERICA that has taken their $12,000.00 2009 Mercedes SMART CAR to a local Mercedes Benz dealer and TRADED it in for the $4500,00 cash for clunkers gives them…

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IMMEDIATELY!!! I have a TENT that I could sell them as a HIGH RISE CONDO complex. :beer

The “smart car” Postive chose to post a picture of has been a sales DISASTER…It is THE SMALLEST car on the road in the USA and they can’t GIVE THEM AWAY (when’s the last time you saw one on the road)…They sold a few of them last summer when gas was $4.00/gallon…But…THOSE DAYS ARE OVER!!! I have a very good friend that sells Mercedes and his dealership hasn’t sold a smart car is 3 months, they are droping the line. Nice try though…Maybe you can find a video of a MOPED hitting a tractor trailer.

Bama made the INCORRECT statement that the GOVERMENT wants to put people in DEATH TRAPS…

The REALITY is…a SMALL new car is actually SAFER than the OLD big cars these people are driving. And THAT is the entire point here…Claiming people are being forced into DEATH TRAPS is a misrepresentaion of REALITY.
The video I posted CLEARLY shows that a TINY car built with MODERN construction methods EASILY out performed a MASSIVE older car. Not just ANY older car, but a model that for DECADES has been associated with SAFETY. In ADDITION… the video producers went even further and found the BIGGEST model in that range (the station wagon)

So…CASH FOR CLUNKERS is getting people OUT of older BIG cars that get fewer miles per gallon, putting them in Smaller SAFER more FUEL efficient NEW cars, Auto sales across the board are UP, the economy seems to have found some footing here, Unemployment levels are slightly improving month after month, the hourly work week is moving UP, New homes sales are UP, construction spending is UP,
consumer confidence is improving…All these numbers are SLIGHT improvements…But from where we were 8 months ago…

I’ll take that over living in a tent with my CANNED GOODS buried under it and my wife and son armed like Dirty Harry.

But keep up the goverments forcing us into “DEATH TRAPS” propaganda even if it isn’t true!!

I guess thats why demand for SUV’s and trucks are down :rolleyes Even though every person I talk to wants a bigger vehicle,I can understand why some are doing this.All the libs are for “green” crap so does’nt recycling fall under that?Or is it like everything else they preach a double standard?

And from a former bodyshop owner I know how well some cars are made.I can run a bead of weld and write my name on the side of most pre '70’s cars,but if I even tack on a "new one I blow a hole through it.I agree with the safety of some,but I personally would rather have my daughter in one of these old tanks or my full size truck anyday.And I’m not alone in that.The rolled steel in the doors you speak of is great,I’ve seen it many times.I think I first seen it in german cars.

When I used “Death traps” I was refering to smartcars,the new tiny kia,nissan,honda,toyota.Comparing these to a ford focas,or honda accord would be a stretch.

You are right on the steel point.

The older cars definitely had thicker gauge steel…But here’s the interesting part. What engineers have learned is…You can use a lighter gauge of steel in exterior body components (saving overall weight) and use NEW alloy’s like Boron Steel in the structural parts of the car and end up with a safety cage that is unbelievable strong.

And you are also right about the German cars…Mercedes was the first to use Boron steel in their doors…Crash test data from those cars prompted laws requiring all car companies to use these construction methods.
The Germans always seem to build incredibly strong cars. Accidents I’ve seen involving Mercedes and BMW’s always take us longer to cut people out. The term Built link a tank comes to mind. (Costs about the same to maintain as a tank too)

If I were buying a car for my son or daughter here’s the short list of things I’sd want.

AS MANY AIR BAGS as I can get…Front, and Side impact at the shoulders, head, knees, rear passenger bags, and curtain bags.

A 5 star crash rating for… off set, side, and rear end collisions.

Kids are in the most danger of any group of drivers other than elderly…They THINK they can drive, but can’t…combine that with a car full of friends distracting the driver and it doesn’t add up to a pretty sight. The elderly have high accident rates, but they are usually LOW SPEED accidents on secondary roads (how many old folks do you know that flat out REFUSE to drive on the highway?) Kids get killed at high speeds on primary roads or interstates.

We agree again :beer I still want V8s and "big cars in my driveway though.I hope I clarified my "deathtrap"term and reason.

No, the government is giving out money to SOME Americans, specifically, those who can AFFORD to buy a new car… low income (typically those with cash or credit problems) are NEGATIVELY AFFECTED by this program BECAUSE the government is destroying these cars making the USED Car market, the one these people buy from, MORE EXPENSIVE to the tune of 10-15%… So, not only do these people get to pay for the $4500 for people who CAN afford to buy a car, they get to pay MORE for the used car, and MORE for the financing of the used car…

So, instead of DESTROYING these cars, the government could JUST AS WELL, GIVE the cars to people who need them, ESPECIALLY those who use the excuse of not having transportation to get to work as a reason not to…

So, to quote a liberal mantra - “the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer”… All with Obama’s blessing…

No, he was correct as he was referring to SMALL CARS, which the government DOES want people to drive, and is structuring GM (government motors) to accomplish this under the auspice of fuel efficiency, but with that AUTOMATICALLY COMES the SAFETY concerns, as larger vehicles - SUV’s, Minivans, Construction Vehicles, Semi-Trucks, etc. are NOT going away…

The only problem with this argument Fdjake, is that there are still LARGER vehicles being sold… Not to mention industrial traffic which SHARE the roads with these smaller cars, and which will just increase over time… I’m not so much worried about me crashing as I am about the other guy crashing into me, and the SMALLER the vehicle I am driving, the likelyhood of me and family being killed or severely injured INCREASES, not decreases…

Over for now. but creeping back up… I was paying $1.62/gal for gas a month before Obama took office, I am now paying $2.55/gal nine months later… that a 58% INCREASE, which puts at 63% of the $4.00 mark… From what I’ve read on this, oil is forecasted to go up to $85/$90 range in the next 6 months, so that will put gas at close to $3/gal…

Concumer confidence has FALLEN for the past two months, but I certainly hope things get better…

A few interesting FACTS about the program…

So, they can’t even run a SIMPLE program as Cash for Clunkers, with MINIMAL administration… website crashes, people are having trouble getting reimbursed, scrap-yards are taking in cars that they can NO LONGER MAKE their money due to the engine being trashed (funny thing is, they could accomplish the same thing WITHOUT screwing the scrap yards, by having the cars junked, and STILL let them sell the parts)…

All they have been successful at with this program IS THROWING MONEY AT IT!

And THESE are the people you want to entrust 1/6th of the TOTAL ECONOMY OF THE COUNTRY TO WITH NATIONALIZED HEALTHCARE??? :banghead :banghead :banghead

What was the original subject again?? :biggrin Oh yeah. The cash for clunkers. I think you’re going to see a good mix of cars being scrapped. Some that need it and some that don’t. I also think FDJake has a good point about making money off this. But there are very few people who can pay cash for a new car. Credit will be available (eventually) to people with good credit, stable jobs and low debt. Those people are getting hard to come by. You’re not gong to see a MEANINGFUL impact until unemployment improves to the point where people have money to spend. They also need more confidence to spend that money instead of saving it. Whne its all aid and done, this will create a small dent in the HUGE inventory that currently pout there.There’s just not enough buyers to soak it all up. But more to FDJAKE’s point, you can certainly make money buying stocks of companies that stand to benefit. Just be careful the price is not already “baked in” to current stock price. In regards to the economy. There’s still a TON of housing inventory to be soaked up. This too will require money, credit and jobs. But I’d rather see stimulus money going toward the purchase, rehab and sale of this RE inventory. Think of all the different occupations that are impacted from owning/maint/repair of a home. THAT stimulates a lasting effect on local economies that creates the JOBS=MONEY=CONFIDENCE=CONSUMER SPENDING=ECONOMIC RECOVERY.

No, it was MISSED by the inspector (city wanted) AND the city who did an inspection and provided an inspection report… WE found it when the walls/floors were opened…

Actually, as you have been told NUMNEROUS TIME, it was a city inspector who provided the original inspection report for repairs THEY REQUIRED on the house, and then also REQUIRED a CERTIFIED inspection on top of that BECAUSE it was not my primary residence… THEY BOTH MISSED IT… If I am PAYING someone to do an inspection that was REQUIRED, it is surpurfluous to then do it myself… So, do you pay your sheetrock guy to install sheetrock and then do it yourself??? Talk about BS…
