A while back one of the more experienced rehabers/landlords made the comment that if a tenant stained a section of carpet, that instead of replacing the carpet, he had a way of painting the entire thing to cover the stain. My question is: who handles something like that? Who do you call? And can any type of carpet be painted (ie. commercial, berber, plush)?
Some types of carpeting can be dyed. I suspect, though, that if it is a very noticable stain, that the discolored spot might take the dye differently and you’d still have a spot.
Dye is good when the carpet is still in good condition but the color looks tired.
You’d be amazed at what a really good professional carpet cleaner can get out of a carpet, so that would be the first thing I’d try.
If the carpet is a plush or pile type, it’s easy to do a patch and very hard to see where the carpet was repaired.
I always keep carpet scraps for use in repairs whenever I install new carpet. But if you don’t have scraps you can often take some carpet out of the closet.
About the carpet dye, try rubbing it after it’s dry with a white cloth. If the dye comes off then it will come off on a tenant’s new white shoes, jeans, etc.
You could have a mad tenant.
We have hand-dyed a rug in a bathtub with RIT dye. Rug was a nice pattern but faded beige. We dyed it brown but it came out purple. Used it anyway.
