Can you buy and sell deeds?

I corresponded with a guy from craigslist about properties he had available where you were simply buying the deeds.

I think all the houses were in foreclosure and he was just selling the deeds on behalf of the prior owners of the properties

Can you do this?

The DEED is the ownership of the house. So, when you sell the deed, you’ve sold the house. Yes, you can buy and sell houses (deeds). If you buy the deed, you’ve bought the house.

I think what the craigslist person is trying to say is that he’s selling mortgages/notes. Or, it could just be a scam!

I would think it is a scam. What good would a deed to a house do you if it is in foreclosure? The lender is going to take the house back no matter who is on the title. It however give you the right to negotiate with the lender in a short sale.
