I have a 4 built around 1984 and the tub/shower units appear to be fiberglass. They’re all prett beat up. I’d like to improve the looks but to rip out the old tub/shower and replace it with a two piece from Home Depot or Lowes seems pretty expensive and a big headache. Has anyone installed liners or done anthing else to improve the looks of old fiberglass units? Several have had cracks in the past and been repaired with fiberglass repair kits.
Thanks
Greg
nothing will look as good as a new one.
I have a guy that has patched and re sprayed a tub and surround and it looked brand new. It cost about the same as installing a new one. I did it for times sake on one of our flips.
Can you share what the cost was? I’m trying to get an idea of what that would cost. The only way to get a quote from the lining guys is to have them come out and give a formal quote.
Thanks,
Greg
If I remember right it was about $250 to re do the tub and a little more, maybe $300 or so to do the surround. I would have to agree with mc though, nothing better than brand new!
Nothing better than a new one…BUT…if its a rental does it matter that much if its not brand spanking new? If its been patched and resprayed it should look good enough for a rental. If its a rehab to be resold to a retail buyer I’d go new.
When I’m renovating, I always use ceramic tile in the bathroom (for the shower surround, about 4’ up on the walls, and on the floors)…Spend an extra day doing this at the beginning, for about $200, and you never have to do it again (though you may have to touch up the grout between tenants but that’s pretty easy)…I also don’t have to worry about a leak in the surround (especially the 2 piece types) that end up causing water damage to the walls, leaking to lower units, etc…
I have refinished bathtubs in cheap rentals and million $ properties in San Francisco and down here in Panama City Beach, FL right on the Gulf. If you use a good refinisher, it will look like new (or at least very close) when they are done and it’ll save you a lot of time and money.
I’m working on rehabbing the house I live in and won’t be listing it for sale until spring.
My bathrooms need to be redone badly but I was thinking of removing the tub surrounds and doing all four walls with shower panelling and of course some decorative trim.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
See my post above on ceramic tile…You can’t beat it for a bathroom…
