Anybody know about "ADVERSE POSSESSION" in California?

I recently saw a news clip where a man started living in a vacant forclosed house in hopes to aquire it through adverse possession. This is where if you physically live in the house and pay the property taxes for a certain amount of time, and nobody comes to claim the property it becomes yours. I know in California the time period is five years. The concept seems brilliant, but what about the bank who actually ownes the property? What happens if they send someone to remove you from the house? Has anyone aquired property through adverse posession, or is anyone trying to right now?
