A Canadian question...

Hello all,

Looking for a little guidance on some investment issues - hope I found the right place.

I’m a Canadian resident for tax purposes, and I own several rental properties in Canada. I’m looking to expand my holdings into certain US cities.

Questions:

  1. Are there any US tax implications for a non-US resident to own / be a landlord of US properties?

  2. Are there any ownership restrictions for a non-US resident?

  3. I’ve been researching land trusts, and they look like a good vehicle for me to use - any pitfalls a non-resident may face?

  4. Any Canadian residents out there with experience in this area who can provide me some advice before I leap?
