I am taking up tiles from a kitchen floor (over 40 yrs. old). They are over hardwood and have that black mastick(?spelling) glue. Looking for the best way to remove them without damaging the floor. Is the heat gun best? Never have had luck with anything chemical, so am reluctant to go that route. Thanks in advance for the help.
It depends on what you are going to do with/to the floor after you get the tiles and glue off.
I attempted this in my home and found that the most productive way was to use the heat gunto get as much as possible up then sand it with commercial sander to get the rest off. (glue gets into cracks, grooves, etc.)
Are you planning on recovering the wood with something else? ???
Thanks for the imput. The glue was so old it was as hard as granite. No glue gun, solvent or sander was working. I had a handyman come in and we put Luann (?spelling) plywood over it and then layed the tile. He deals with old houses and said that was the most cost effective way. What a challenge! Always a learning experience.
